BOAZ, KY (KFVS) - A mother and her daughter are behind bars after police say a child custody fight got out of control.
According to the Graves County Sheriff's Department, deputies were called to a home on SR 849 East in Boaz for a report of a physical fight over child custody.
Witnesses told police 23-year-old Candice Singleton-Buie and her mother, 48-year-old Kathy Mellinger, both of Nashville, Tennessee, arrived at the home Monday afternoon. According to police, the women grabbed two children from the yard and put them in their car, without child safety seats.
An investigator said family members told them they were concerned about the safety of the kids and tried to stop Singleton-Buie and Mellinger from leaving. That's when deputies believe the fight started.
According to the sheriff's department, the mother daughter pair got into their car to leave and hit a man in the leg as they drove away. Deputies said they also rammed another car, all with the kids in the back seat.
Singleton-Buie is charged with two counts of 4th degree assault, one count of 2nd degree assault, three counts of wanton endangerment, and one count of 1st degree criminal mischief.
Mellinger is charged with alcoholic intoxication and possession of an open alcoholic container in a motor vehicle.
Both are in the Graves County Jail.
