Identity of 8-year-old boy killed in ATV crash released

PORTAGEVILLE, MO (KFVS) -

An 8-year-old boy has died in an ATV crash Monday afternoon near Portageville, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

The Highway Patrol reports a pick-up truck driven by Amos French, 60-years-old of Portageville, was heading South on New Madrid County Road 417, when the 8-year-old driving the ATV pulled out from a farm road.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol crash report the driver of the ATV was Jacob Harris of Portageville.

People in the area tell Heartland News the community is shocked by the accident.  "Let's see if we can't just pull together and get through this terrible accident," said Betty Hawkins.

"It's hard to imagine as a parent, if a young kid like that does prematurely, its horrible," said Portageville convenience store owner Ashref Rajput.

Parrot says it's important to not let kids under the age of 16 drive motor vehicles, like an ATV.

"I want to stress to people keep your children off of ATVs especially out here on county roads, state roads, no place for children," said Parrot.

He says they deal with too many accidents, like this one.

"The kids on ATVs, motorcycles, out on the rural part of the road, yes we do [deal with accidents. They] have a little more freedom, not as much traffic, but there is a reason you have to be 16 years old to operate an ATV," said Parrot.

"I feel it's important we keep our children off the roads, because they're too dangerous," said Hawkins Butler.

It's too dangerous, and too easy for an accident like this one to happen.

"You can't even think about that, can't even realize what kind of loss they have," said Rajput.
