CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Ameren Missouri says hot weather led to Tuesday's power outage in Cape Girardeau.
Spokesperson Jean Mason says the heat melted a portion of a wire along the 700 block of Mount Auburn late in the afternoon, causing it to break.
Mason says things like this are pretty common, and can happen year-round.
Mason says an electrical overload also contributed to the break, with so many people running their air conditioners at once, and at full-blast.
Around 1,600 people had no power for several hours Tuesday in the heat.
Work crews had everything up and running again in a few hours.
