Man uses music to heal the soul at cancer center

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The saying goes, music heals the soul.  Well, Patrick Rafferty provides therapy for those who need a little extra healing.

"It's one of the things I look forward to every week, being able to come here," Rafferty said.

Every Thursday, Rafferty shares his classical guitar skills with patients at the Southeast Cancer Center in Cape Girardeau.

"We have patients who actually have asked to reschedule their appointments to come on Thursday, just to hear Patrick," said cancer center employee, Kenda Steel-Girod.

A local musician who's studies at the graduate level, played many venues and won some impressive awards, Rafferty says this venue has special meaning to him.

"Earlier this year I had a really close friend who has an immediate family member that was diagnosed with cancer," said Rafferty. "You feel really helpless being on the outside and not being able to do anything. And I asked myself, what can I do in this situation?"

That led Patrick to the lobby at the cancer center, and a crowd who needs a little extra music in their lives.

"I have actually seen a patient come in, not in the best of moods, just down and out, not feeling really well. She started crying, a happy cry, it made her day," Steel-Girod said.

That's why Rafferty says he'll keep sharing his Thursday's with this audience.

"Even if it takes a few moment out of what they're dealing with, it's worth it to me," said Rafferty.
