Banned fireworks in Illinois

The Illinois State Fire Marshal is warning that fireworks in the hands of amateurs can lead to serious injury or even death.

Fire Marshal Larry Makaitas is encouraging people to attend sanctioned fireworks shows and leave the rockets' red glare to professionals.

Banned fireworks in Illinois include those that explode when lit- such as firecrackers of any size, bottle rockets or roman candles.

Those who want to purchase legal consumer fireworks must show a permit acquired from a local fire department. Novelty fireworks such as snake or "glow-worm" pellets, smoke devices and trick noisemakers are legal.
