CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

If you're ready to heat things up with some Fourth of July fireworks, you'd better check out the rules for your city and state.

In Missouri, all categories of fireworks are allowed. However, communities can have specific rules on when, where and what time you can set them off.

In Illinois, only novelties like sparklers and punks are allowed, unless your hometown gives local approval.

Carbondale police say they usually have problems with bottle rockets. Shoot one off there and you'll get a city citation.

You may be able to buy bottle rockets, roman candles and other fireworks in Kentucky, but don't try setting them off in Paducah.

A new law in the bluegrass state lets you get more of a bang for your fireworks buck: But, city leaders in Paducah have set their own rules in place.

Under a city ordinance that took effect Monday, you can only use sparklers, ground spinners and other type 1 fireworks.

City leaders point to the restriction in the new law about not igniting fireworks within 200 feet of any structure as the reason why type 2 and 3 fireworks are off limits.
