CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Even though you have likely heard these tips before, its important to go over them again.
Here are some tips to help beat the heat this summer:
- Drink plenty of non caffeine and non alcoholic drinks
- Wear light colored and loose fitting clothes
- Limit outdoor activity, postponing activities until after 6pm is best
- Take frequent brakes in the air conditioning.
Southeast Missouri Hospital Licensed Nurse Practitioner Angela Selzer says in extreme heat, it's most important to listen to your body and watch for warning signs.
"If you start to notice if you're felling light headed or if you're going to use the restroom and you notice your urine is getting to be a dark color, that could be an early symptom that you're starting to get dehydrated," said Selzer. "That's a clue your body is telling you."
Selzer says if you find yourself feeling weak, dizzy or nauseous, it's best to get to air conditioning immediately and apply a cool compress to your forehead and armpits.
Selzer says the emergency room is already a busy place on the Fourth of July, so she is hoping folks take the heat seriously.
