FRANKLIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Search and rescue crews recovered the body of a 19-year-old Freeman Spur man Thursday afternoon at Rend Lake.
The Rend Lake Search and Rescue Team and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recovered the body of Catreal L. Brown at 2:42 p.m. in 8.4 feet of water at South Sandusky Beach.
Franklin County Sheriff Don Jones says they got multiple 911 calls just before 4 p.m. Wednesday about a swimmer who was missing at south Sandusky Beach. The young man had been swimming with friends.
The coroner got the call around 4:30 Wednesday afternoon to come to the beach.
The Sesser Fire Protection District Search and Rescue, Rend Lake Search and Rescue dive team, Army Corps of Engineers and Franklin County Sheriff's deputies were all involved in the search.
Jones says they are did a grid type search of the swimming area at south Sandusky Beach. He adds that it's a bigger area with deeper water than normal due to all the rain southern Illinois has received.
Searchers brought out lights Wednesday evening so they could continue their search for the man after it got dark.
By around 1 a.m. Thursday the search was suspended until daybreak when crews will return to the lake.
This is the first downing of the year at Rend Lake. The sheriff says it is uncommon on Rend Lake, especially for the size and the number of people that use the lake during the summer months.
Jones adds it is a tragic event for the young man and his family.
