One arrested, one injured after police chase, crash

PORTAGEVILLE, MO (KFVS) -

A police chase in Portageville landed one man in jail and a woman in the hospital.

An officer says 27-year-old Christopher Mays was driving 60 miles per hour down King Avenue in Portageville, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol and Portageville Police.

The posted speed limit is 20 miles per hour.

After the officer began his pursuit, police say Mays ran three stop signs and eventually lost control of his car and flipped it.

In the car with Mays was 19-year-old Bethany Moore of Portageville.

She was seriously injured in the wreck and had to be flown to a Cape Girardeau hospital.

Mays was arrested and faces charges of second-degree assault and driving with a revoked license.

A highway patrol dispatcher also says Mays was drunk, but because his passenger was injured in the crash he faces the assault charge instead of a DWI.

Neither Mays or Moore were wearing seatbelts.

Mays was taken to the New Madrid County Jail.
