Murphysboro police warn of telephone scam

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) -

Murphysboro police are warning residents of a telephone scam that is hitting the area.

According to Murphysboro police, a person is calling and claiming to be from Ameren attempting to collect an overdue bill by asking for a credit card number or banking information.

The person or people provide a claim number and will allow you to speak to a supervisor. Then they fraud the bank account.

Police say the origin of the scam cannot be traced and the call comes from a restricted number.

According to the police department, Ameren does not conduct business in this manner, and if you have bill questions to contact Ameren directly.

Police remind residents not to provide personal information over the phone or Internet.
