Marble Hill spelling ace ranks 5th in nation

MARBLE HILL, MO (KFVS) - Sierra Owens just finished 6th grade at Woodland School in Marble Hill and now this 12 year old is the 5th best speller in the nation for her age group.

Wednesday Sierra was enjoying her summer break and hanging out with her best friend Lacey.

Sierra says she first started testing her spelling ability with Lacey back in the fourth grade.

Then, she says she never would have imagined even going to the state spelling bee, much less the national one.

This past school year Sierra says she won the Missouri state bee by spelling entrepreneur and massacre correctly.  She explains what is was like right after she finished the national competition.

"My junior beta sponsor was standing there and said, 'You were in there for a really long time.' and I was like, 'Yeah those were some really hard words," explained Sierra.  "Then he asked me what word I got out on and I'm like 'I have no idea really.'  My parents were sitting over there and they were like, 'So how many were there, what did you get?'  I said, 'There were 24 and I got about fifth.'"

Sierra says she hopes to do more spelling bees in the future, and wants to be a teacher when she grows up.
