CHICAGO (AP) - A man who says a former Chicago police official tortured him into confessing to murder has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit.
Melvin Jones says former police Lt. Jon Burge beat and shocked him into a confession in 1982.
Jones was acquitted at retrial after serving five years in prison.
Burge was convicted last year of lying about the torture of suspects decades ago. He testified that he'd never witnessed or participated in torture.
Jones says in his lawsuit that Burge and others conspired to cover up the alleged abuse.
Jones' attorney, Sam Adam Jr., tells the Chicago Tribune that the conspiracy continued when Burge denied the torture claims on the stand last year.
Burge attorney Rick Beuke denied that Burge tortured Jones.
