MOUNT VERNON, IL (KFVS) - A violent crash in southern Illinois ends in tragedy.
According to the Jefferson County, Ill. coroner, it happened just before 5 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 64, south of Mount Vernon.
82-year-old Charles Townsend of Evansville, Indiana was heading west on Interstate 64, attempting to get on Interstate 57.
He went through a guardrail, recently taken out by a semi truck that hadn't been replaced.
According the Jefferson County coroner, Townsend's car then took a 50-foot-drop, nose diving into the ground, then bounced hitting the southbound I-57 bridge.
The car slid down a concrete slope where it then came to rest.
Townsend was pronounced dead at the scene
