Two detained while police shut off street in Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, IL (KFVS) - A police standoff ends with no arrest being made Friday afternoon. Harrisburg officers detained two subjects and conducted a search at a local motel for two Arkansas residents.

Saline Co. central dispatch got information that 2 subjects from Arkansas were in the Harrisburg area. The two subjects were asked to be detained following a residential armed robbery in Arkansas.

Chief Robert Smith says Harrisburg officers assisted by the Saline Co. Sheriff's Office and the Illinois State Police set up a perimeter to secure the area. They entered the Economy Inn on E. Poplar St. in Harrisburg.

"Poplar St. was closed off for safety purposes as we conducted the search," said Chief Smith.

Officers secured the two and waited for confirmation from Yell County, Arkansas.

"No arrests were made, they were only temporarily detained," added Chief Smith.

Arkansas police said the residents did not need to be detained any longer for their county.

"We conducted this operation with safety of our citizens at the top most priority," said  Chief Smith. "We are  sorry if we inconvenienced motorist though Harrisburg by closing Poplar St. The situation was resolved where no one was hurt."

Poplar St. was closed for about one hour Friday afternoon.
