CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Southeast Missouri State University athletic director announces he's leaving.
SEMO Director of Athletics John Shafer is retiring after two and a half years on the job.
Shafer says it was a very tough decision he had to make due to family issues away from Cape Girardeau.
"Southeast Missouri State University is an outstanding institution and while I love my job and I'm honored to have the opportunity to work with such wonderful student-athletes and coaches, it's time for me to devote some quality time to my family," Shafer said in a press release. "My wife, Dianne, and I both have parents who are in need of some assistance and I believe this is a good time to leave Southeast in the capable hands of an outstanding athletics organization."
He was formerly director of athletics at Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Mississippi.
Shafer played professional baseball in the Kansas City Royals organization from 1969 to 1970.
Shafer was named to the position in December 2008 to replace former Southeast Athletic Director Don Kaverman.
No word yet on a timetable to find a replacement for Shafer.
