12-year-old boy accidentally shot in leg

RANDOLPH COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

A 12-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the leg by another 12-year-old boy Sunday after the children found a rifle in an outbuilding.

The boys found an unsecured .22 caliber long rifle with a hollow point round in an outbuilding on Zion Church Road Sunday, according to the Randolph County Sheriff's Office.

One boy accidentally shot the other boy in the upper right leg.

The injured boy was taken to Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center in St. Louis where he was admitted overnight and was released the next day.

Randolph County Sheriff Hoelscher urges parents to keep all firearms locked up and away from children or secure all firearms with gunlocks.

The Randolph Sheriff's Office has gun locks available to the public at no charge.  The gunlocks can be picked up at the sheriff's office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
