Fire safety at Illinois colleges

Illinois officials are urging parents of college-bound children to start thinking about fire safety in

college housing.

September is Campus Fire Safety Month and Sept. 22 is "LOOK UP! Pay it Forward" day in Illinois. But the Illinois State Fire Marshal is urging parents and students to consider fire safety as they complete college housing contracts this summer.

"LOOK UP!" day was created in 2005 by a mother whose 22-year-old son and two other students died in a fire in a Chicago apartment that had no working smoke detectors.

The campaign spreads the fire safety message to college students and encourages them to "look up" to ensure fire detection systems are operating properly. Promotional posters will be distributed.
