Sheriff's deputy charged with 20 felony counts

PULASKI COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - A Pulaski County Sheriff's deputy is accused of giving weapons to her husband who is a convicted felon.

Tara M. Kern, 38, of Villa Ridge is charged with two counts of official misconduct, 16 counts of unlawful sale of firearms, and two counts of obstructing justice, according to the Union County State's Attorney Tyler R. Edmonds.  Edmonds is acting as a special prosecutor in Pulaski County.

Kern is accused of providing firearms to her husband, William A. Kern, who is a convicted felon in 2010 and 2011.

She is accused of giving him weapons that were obtained by her in her official capacity as a Pulaski County Sheriff's deputy.

Kern is also accused of making false statements to police and concealing evidence during the investigation.

Police arrested Kern on June 9.

She was taken to the Jackson County Jail in Murphysboro on $50,000 bond.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosive, the Illinois State Police, and the Union County Sheriff's Office, under the Federal and State Trafficking Enforcement Network investigated the case.
