WAPPAPELLO, MO (KFVS) -

Those living in and around Wappapello Lake received big news Tuesday afternoon.

Lindell Huskey with the Missouri Department of Transportation says a Highway T bypass is now open.

High waters from the Wappapello Lake spillway destroyed a portion of Hwy T earlier in May.

Folks living in Wappapello met with officials from the Army Corp of Engineers, MoDOT, and Wappapello Lake Tuesday.

They were able to voice their concerns.  The biggest news that came out of the meeting is the opening of that bypass on Highway T.  Many say the previous detour added an extra 30 minutes to their commute.  This new route is a huge relief.

"I won't be tearing up the car anymore going on that detour, and my commute will be much better," said Wappapello resident Jack Willet.  "This lake is a resort and this will really help the area strive in these economic times."

Memorial weekend is usually a huge weekend for the area, as it is the unofficial start to summer.

People are still highly encouraged to come out and enjoy the lake.  Some facilities are still limited but boating and fishing are allowed.  To find daily updates call 1-800-LAKEINFO.
