KTC: Wickliffe to Cairo bridge now open

Posted: Updated:
WICKLIFFE, KY (KFVS) -

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials say they have completed repairs on the US 51/US 60/62 Bridge between Wickliffe Kentucky and Cairo, Illinois, opening in time for your Monday morning commute.

KTC officials say it was reopened at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

According to the KTC, as many as 5,500 drivers cross the Cairo Bridge every day and have been re-routed in recent weeks due to flooding.

KTC officials say many commuters who regularly cross the bridge have been forced to take drastic measures during the flood. What is normally a six mile trip from Wickliffe to Cairo, ill, turned into a 90-mile detour.

Saturday Kentucky highway crews worked to scrub away about an inch of mud that had settled onto the pavement in some areas as well as drift and debris to clear the roadway for traffic.

Meanwhile, highway maintenance crews continue to work to reopen US 51 at the Ballard-Carlisle County line just south of Wickliffe. KTC officials say floodwaters in that area dumped several inches of mud on the highway before that section can reopen. Engineers are hopeful that section of US 51 between mile markers 0-2 in Ballard County will be back in service sometime Monday.

Until US 51 reopens south of Wickliffe, traffic is detoured via KY 1212 and US 62 to Bardwell.
