"My son was adopted at 11 months of age. He could not sit up and had many developmental delays. He was later diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, thus he has to work very hard in the areas of impulse control, auditory sensitivity, and attention to task. Misty Wiseman welcomed my little boy into her classroom community with open arms. She motivates him to try hard and to like himself. Before he walked into the classroom, she had "a place" for him, a cubby, a desk, and a lot of love. She simply said, 'I want him to feel welcome.' I don't think she knows the impact all of this had on him. For the first time, he felt like someone valued him. This is a feat as he has never, not one time, wanted to go to school, since enrollment in his formalized education beginning at age 3. Instead of crying himself to sleep at night saying "I'm the bad kid", he sleeps in his own bed and wakes up in the morning excited to go to school. As I mother, this has been such a blessing and gift. Mrs. Wiseman channels my son's energy into leadership. She molds not scolds. She foresees problems before they occur, thus intervenes before he has the chance to become upset. This is challenging for Mrs. Wiseman as I know she has a full classroom of energetic 2nd graders, though she does this effortlessly and with ease. The behaviors my son exhibits are still very much present. We didn't leave our problems at the door, when we transitioned to a new school. His behaviors are now observed with the focus on his celebrations instead of challenges. My son is motivated and is celebrated as all kids are "good kids", if someone takes the chance to see it. Misty Wiseman not only took the chance, she embraced it. She has embraced my son. Instead of merely teaching reading, her reading groups come alive as they learn about science in reading and investigate things like "the surface of the moon", in addition to the Balanced Literacy strategies. My son is thinking like a scientist, while improving his reading skills. How fun!!! She has not only touched my son's live, she saved him. My son is on a happy journey, and I can't wait to see what he learns next…about school, his classroom, and about his wonderful self. Thank you, Mrs. Wiseman for being Alex's best teacher"
