Some Alexander Co. residents pack up their homes

ALEXANDER COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Residents living in some Alexander County communities are taking no chances. Rising flood waters from the Mississippi River are the major concern.

On Sunday evening residents of Willard Town and Miller City packed up trailers, cars and trucks.  One of those is Debbie Willis.

Willis lives in Willard Town. She says so far about 30 percent of her belongings are out.  Willis adds they plan to have most out before the river hits their home.

She says after more than three decades of living the area they are taking no chances, especially after what happen back in 1993.

"'93 when the levee broke I lived a quarter mile down the road and moved out in boats," Debbie Willis said. "So we're moving out before we have to do it in boats again."

Willis says they're moving to a friend's home in Olive branch. She adds they're also moving all farmer equipment to hire ground.

Willis says no one asked them to leave. She says after living in the area for so long, when the river hits a certain level and more heavy rain is predicted, it's best to get out before it's too late.
