About 20 members of the Illinois Army National Guard soldiers are home after serving in Afghanistan since July.
Military officials say families gathered at Camp Lincoln in Springfield on Friday to welcome the soldiers. The soldiers marched in and were released shortly afterward. They were greeted with hugs from loved ones as family rushed to them.
Major Ramona Zavala of Chicago said there were no words to describe being home. She said it's exciting to "to have back all the resources we tend to take for granted."
The soldiers of the Bilateral Embedded Staff Team (BEST) A6 worked Polish and Afghan soldiers on hundreds of combat patrols.
