The Ove Glove

The Ove Glove
By: Amy Jacquin

Wether you work in the kitchen a lot, or a little... You need something to protect your hands when getting foods out of the oven. The Ove Glove promises a comfortable, five-fingered grip. Can it stand the heat? Or should it get out of the kitchen? We put it to the "Does it Work" test to find out.

The Ove Glove looks more like a gardening glove... And it is cotton on the inside. But the outer layer is made of Nomex and Kevlar... Makers claim it's perfect for handling hot surfaces around the house, from baking to light bulbs.

"It fits me pretty well, really," says Amanda Eads, our volunteer.

We decide to bake some cookies, to give the Ove Glove a test. It's supposed to withstand extreme heat up to 480 degrees. We get the cookies baking, and then put another claim to the test.

The manufacturer promises "when exposed to an open flame, the outer layer of the glove does not catch fire and does not melt."

"It's not getting warm yet," Amanda says as Amy Jacquin holds a flaming lighter below her hand. "Not yet. I barely feel some warmth, but not hot at all."

After Amanda bravely lent a hand first, Amy decides to give it a try, too!

"You're very close to it, right on it!" exclaims Amanda. "Yea, you can see it smoking a little!" says Amy. "I can feel it's warmer, but it's not what I'd call hot at all. It passes that test!"

It's time to take the chocolate chip cookies out. Amanda doesn't hesitate to grab the Ove Glove, reach into the oven, and remove both piping hot pans.

"I like it better than a regular mitt," she says. "I also like the fingers, because it's easier to grasp things."

She uses a traditional oven mitt on one hand, and compares it to the Ove Glove.

"I can tell a difference," Amanda describes. "The mitt is getting warm already. The Ove Glove is not. As much baking as I do, I'd be apt to purchase one. I've been burned before, and this is nice!"

So overall, the $15 Ove Glove does what it says it will do. And it's machine washable. So we give the Ove Glove an A.
