Twitter Tuesday: How Twitter can help during disasters

With severe weather possibly on the way, use Twitter to communicate with public officials.

Several local fire, police, and sheriff's departments are on Twitter, and when severe weather hits, Twitter can be used to let them know where storm damage has hit.

Newark, NJ Mayor Cory Booker used Twitter to communicate with his constituents during the winter storm that hammered the city in January.

One person tweeted, "My road isn't plowed and I need to get to work! Can you help with this? I live in Vailsburg on Telford."

Booker responded, "On it."

The mayor sent out hundreds of tweets to people who requested help or had questions about the clean up effort.
