FORT KNOX, KY (WAVE) - A Fort Knox soldier was killed April 15 in Afghanistan. According to a Fort Knox spokesperson, specialist Joseph Kennedy of St. Paul, Minnesota died from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire.
It was Kennedy's first combat tour after joining the army a year ago. Kennedy served with Task Force Duke in the Third Brigade Combat Team, First Infantry Division. He will receive a bronze star and purple heart posthumously. Fort Knox will hold a memorial service on post, though the time and date have yet to be announced. This marks the second death in April for the unit and the fourth since January 1, 2011.
