A few more southern Illinois residents are now prepared should the worst happen.
Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) held three medical "Decision Day" events Friday St. Joseph's Hospital in Murphysboro, Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, and Herrin Hospital.
The events were designed to get people talking about tough topics like assigning power of attorney should you become incapacitated by illness or injury, as well deciding what you'd like doctors to do if you end up on life support.
"You have to ask, what do I really want to have happen should I be in that situation where a life threatening illness or accident takes place, do I want to have life sustaining support, or do I not?" said event organizer Gene Honn with SIH. "It's a good discussion that they need to have not only with themselves individually, but also with their family and loved ones."
Organizers say simply filling out a few forms can not only help healthcare professionals abide by your wishes, but also save your family and loved ones a lot of disagreements, pain and heartache if your plans are already laid out in black and white on paper.
