MOUNDS, IL (KFVS) - According to Illinois State Police, 24-year-old Johnnie Hadley is behind bars in Franklin County. Hadley faces first degree murder charges in connection with the shooting death of 28-year-old Joseph Jones of Mounds.
"He always had a smile he was a nice person he always treated me right," said Debra Smith, Jones' aunt.
"It was just senseless," said Mary Reed, a family friend. "I just wish that the kids of the day would stop the violence."
Mary Reed says she was first to find Jones early Wednesday morning. She says his body was laying near her home on South McKinley.
"It was like a dream," said Reed. According to Reed, she heard four gunshots.
"After the fourth round went off, I told my youngest daughter to get low and get to safety," said Reed. "When they stopped I came outside and saw his body laying in the street."
Police arrived not long after they got the call around 12:30 a.m. Witnesses say a large crowd gathered in the streets. Now, a growing memorial of cards and flowers stands where Jones was shot.
"I just can't believe it," said Smith. "I just saw him yesterday."
Smith says Jones had three children.
"I think someone needs to pay for this," said Smith.
Hadley remains in the Franklin County Jail.
Bond is set at $1,000,000. There is no word yet on a motive for the shooting.
