Man sentenced to 45 years in Alton shooting death

A southwestern Illinois judge ordered a Virginia man to spend 45 years in prison in the 2009 death of a man he shot twice in the back during a confrontation.

Twenty-4-year-old Diamond Barnes of Virginia Beach, VA., was sentenced Friday in Madison County, where he was found guilty last October of first-degree murder. He represented himself during the bench trial.

Barnes was among four people who went to an Alton home early May 2, 2009, to visit his grandmother while she was being tended to by 23-year-old Marcus Shannon and his wife.

After Shannon told the group to return later, Shannon was shot during an argument.

Several witnesses at trial insisted Shannon had a gun, though a prosecutor said authorities only found rusty, barely operational weapons in the home.
