Soda Stream Home Soda Maker: Does it Work?

Posted: Updated:

Makers of Soda Stream Home Soda Maker say you can turn water into soda in just 30 seconds.

"I think the kids would be thrilled to make their own soda!"

Mom, Sherry Medler, would be happy if this soda maker cuts down on all the empty cans and glasses she's constantly picking up.

"We 'll go through one in a day because they'll pour a glass and then run off and leave it."

Here we go. We filled the glass bottle with regular water and inserted the carbonator into the machine. Next, pour in your flavor of choice. Kids, Garrett and Layne pick root beer.

"Me first, me first!"

By the look on Garrett's face. We might need to do this again. It's a little flat. Here's the trick. The directions say you need to really give this a few good hard presses until you hear three buzzes. We do that and what a difference!  We're fizzing now. So much so...we can even see the gases releasing!

"Tweak it until you like it!" laughed Sherry.

While these sodas don't taste exactly like name-brand colas, we like it.

Again, it might taste a little flat until you get the hang of it. I left the Soda Stream maker with the Medler family for a whole weekend. Sherry said they tried all of the flavors and really liked making their own soda.

"I think the kids would drink it."

She points out the soda flavorings don't contain high fructose corn syrup and significantly less calories than regular soda. Meantime, Garrett's going green.

"That's another good thing. There's so much trash that goes along with normal 2-liters and cans. With this, you virtually have no waste. You can send in your carbon dioxide. The bottles are re-usable. I think it'd be really good."

by the way, these bottles have 50 servings for $5 total.  The box says that makes several liters and equals up to 150 cans.

You can buy refills and the carbon dioxide online, but there are local stores that offer this, too, at a reasonable price.  The Kitchen Collection Store at the Sikeston Factory Outlet and some select Kohls' department stores both sell this product.  Here is the online site:

It's $100 at first for one of these machines.

"B+ given the flavor-tweaking issues," said Sherry.

We're running out of fizz for this test. The Soda Stream Soda Maker gets a sparkling B+ on this Does it Work test.
