AKIN, IL (KFVS) - Powerful winds blowing across Southern Illinois tore off part of the Akin Community Grade School roof.
The damage was discovered on MOnday morning when workers arrived to open the building for students.
"When we got here this morning part of the roof was off, the structure is still there,"said Superintendent Belinda Hill.
"We did have some leakage inside the gymnasium."
And for awhile on Monday it was school as usual for the students.
"They came in today and we stayed until lunchtime. Then I needed them to go home so we could get our machinery in there to start drying things up and replacing ceiling tiles."
Meanwhile crews were busy on the outside of the school nailing down a large blue tarp to try and keep future rain water out until the roof can be completely repaired.
"We will be back to a regular session on Tuesday morning. So get ready have your homework done," said Superintendent Hill.
Classes at Thompsonville Grade School were also affected by the storm, classes started about an hour later then normal on Monday. Repair crews were still working on power lines in the area that were damaged by the strong winds.
