Missouri Treasurer empties bank boxes

JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KFVS & KRCG) - Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel is looking at new ways to return unclaimed property to its rightful owners.

The treasurer's office has opened twelve hundred bank boxes since November. Inside those boxes were things like antique dolls, old American flags, coins and military medals.

Zweifel says the treasures represent only a small part of the $600 million in unclaimed property held by his office.

Since taking office, Zweifel has returned more than $72 million in property to more than 200,000 account owners.

Zweifel says a special focus on abandoned military medals has successfully returned those awards to almost two dozen families of veterans.

Missourians can search for unclaimed property anytime at showmemoney.com.

On the web site, you can register for e-mail notifications and file paperless claims.
