PEORIA, IL (KFVS) - Area businesses should be aware of a scam targeting dealers involved in the sale of recreational motor sports equipment.
Master Sergeant Gregg Cavanaugh, Director of the State and Local Auto Theft Enforcement Task Force (S.L.A.T.E.), is warning the area business community aware of a scam targeting dealers involved in the sale of boats, trikes, all-terrain vehicles, and motorcycles.
Over the past several months, The Auction House, based out of Murfreesboro, TN, has contacted businesses located in Tazewell and Peoria counties. The Auction House claimed it could obtain top dollar prices at auction for the end of year merchandise still sitting on the showroom floors of the local businesses.
Once the businesses agreed to have their merchandise sold at auction, The Auction House would make arrangements for the transportation of the equipment to Murfreesboro, TN.
The Auction House failed to forward any proceeds of the auction back to the businesses.
Three businesses in the Peoria area have fallen victim to this scam, with more than $200,000 worth of lost inventory.
If your business has fallen victim to this scam, or has been contacted by The Auction House, please contact S.L.A.T.E. at (309) 494-8290.
Master Sergeant Cavanaugh encourages the public to do their research when they receive unsolicited calls from companies wishing to do business with them.
