SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - Staff at Kenny Rogers Children's Center in Sikeston put the finishing touches on the brand-new addition just in time for their annual telethon. The addition features a 7,000 square foot room that houses an indoor playground and additional classrooms.
Therapist Brandy Dallas said the gym is indoors so the children may use it all year, despite inclement weather. Every feature of the jungle gym is wheelchair accessible. One wall of the addition also contains a magnetic rock wall. Children can "stick" ends and beginnings of words displayed on magnets and then climb to the other side of the rock wall to complete their "word." The addition also features a basketball hoop for children to work on physical exercises in a group setting, which is something the center hasn't had before.
Director Michelle Fayette says this addition was built from donations acquired at Telethon 2010. The center achieved its goal of $500,000. Still, she said the capital campaign must continue. She hopes this year's telethon can raise enough money to include a state of the art motion sensor lab inside the empty rooms next to the new indoor playground. Fayette says therapists and physicians from across the state of Missouri are inquiring about the Kenny Rogers Children's Center, and her staff would like to lead the way with new technology.
"If everybody would do what they did last year, we will meet and exceed our goal," said Fayette.
Fayette also said since 1973, the center has never charged a local family for services, based on the donations received at the telethon. Currently, the Kenny Rogers Children's Center serves 400 children in many surrounding states.
