Engine failure causes plane crash in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - Not your average crash tied up traffic in Carbondale Friday afternoon.

An airplane had to make an emergency landing in a field near the intersection of Pleasant Hill and Union Hill roads on the Southern Illinois University campus.

A university spokesman says the pilot, 28-year-old Matt Hillis, took off from Poplar Bluff heading toward Indianapolis.

Around noon, the single-engine 2004 Lancair fixed wing plane started having engine trouble and Hillis had to put it down. Hillis told Illinois State Police he began losing oil pressure 40 miles west of Carbondale.

As he tried to land in a field near SIU farms, the plane's wing clipped a utility pole, crossed Pleasant Hill Road and came to rest nose down in a ditch on Union Hill Road.

Hillis was not injured.

Illinois State Police say Pleasant Hill remains closed.

The FAA has to examine the plane before it is removed from the scene.
