Buddy Check 12: New cancer center makes care convenient

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Of course no one wants to battle cancer.

But for those who fight the disease, Southeast Health is making it easier to get much needed treatment with their new Southeast Cancer Center.

"We didn't think it was going to be much of anything but she sent me for a mammogram," said Holly Zoellner. However, after her doctor found a lump last July, Zoellner got the news that she had breast cancer.

"Kicks the breath out of you when you hear that, " Zoellner said.

She's been through surgery, chemotherapy and now radiation, a treatment that she's one of the first patients to use at the new Southeast Cancer Center in Cape Girardeau.

"The facility is very nice," Zoellner said. "It's a lot larger, very pretty, more modern, the valet outside is very nice."

"A lot of our cancer patients are fatigued because of their treatment," said the center's director Judy Aslin. "It just saves them time where they want to be doing something else and living their life."

Aslin says that's the focus of this new facility. Now patients can get chemotherapy, radiation, lab work, pharmacy services… even wig fittings, through a partnership with the American Cancer Society, all in one place.

Everything from the construction to the design of the building is meant to inspire hope in patients.

"We have rooms that are named and in many of the rooms when you see the artwork inside or outside it's all designed to be a relaxing, serene setting," said Aslin.

"It's very calming," Zoellner added.

It's all an effort to help the patient conquer cancer on their path to victory.

Zoellner's winning her battle and is thankful to the Southeast doctors and staff for helping her.

"The doctors and nurses have been wonderful during everything so if something makes their job a little easier, I'm all for it," Zoellner said.

In April, imaging services will also be available at the Southeast Cancer Center, adding to the convenience.
