MUNCIE, IN (CNN) - An Indiana veteran received the Purple Heart 50 years after returning from the Korean War.
Marine Officer Arthur Welch, 80, was awarded the Purple Heart in honor of his services on Monday in Muncie, IN. Welch was wounded in 1953 by shrapnel, but at the time, he did not know he was eligible for the award.
"We were in a big fire fight on the side of a hill and there was no kind of cover because everything was blown off of it," Welch said. "[It] was just all dirt, no vegetation left."
Welch learned of his eligibility while applying for medical benefits through Veteran Affairs.
