Police investigate shooting after man shot in groin

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) – Murphysboro Police are investigating an early morning shooting at an apartment complex.

According to the Murphysboro Police Department, an early morning shooting happened at the Douglas Ridge Apartments on 1200 Block of Shomaker Drive.

When police arrived to the apartment complex just after 1:30 a.m., they say they found an 18-year-old male resident that had been shot in the groin with a shotgun.  The victim was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale for surgery due to the injury.  The condition of the victim is not known at this time.

Officers investigating the shooting say Murphysboro resident 19-year-old Danton Rawson was playing with the shotgun that he thought was unloaded and shot the victim at close range.

Murphysboro Police say Rawson fled from the scene, but later turned himself in to police.

Rawson faces an aggravated discharge of a firearm charge.

Police say the investigation continues into the shooting.
