"They tried to kill me," Neal said.
Neal still has his hospital bracelet on while his injuries start to heal. The 62-year-old shows one of many, which he says, is left behind from an alleged attack in the entrance of his own home.
"Looks like stitches?" Heartland News reporter Julia Bruck asked. "Yes," Neal Said. "How many?" Bruck asked. "Six" Neal said.
Neal says he heard a knock at the door around 1:30 Saturday morning. But says when he asked for a name, he didn't hear one, so he opened the door.
"I seen a camouflage jacket and a metal bat over a man's head and, boom, he hit me," Neal said.
Neal says he saw two men, one stood by the door while the other continued to strike.
"My first thought was this isn't real," Neal said.
While Neal in his sixties, he says, he luckily knew how to block and protect his head. Neal says he tried to pull a knife out of his own pocket, but was hit again. That's when Neal says he called his grandson, who staying at his home, for help.
"He came, picked me up, leaned me against the door there and took out after him," Neal said.
Neal says he doesn't know why he was attacked, but adds nobody is going force him out of his home.
"I'm going to protect my home," Neal added. "I'm going to keep it where my grand kids, my kids, you, anyone that comes here, I can assure them that they're safe because it's my home."
Neal says luckily he could defend himself and there was help nearby. But he warns other older people to be aware.
