JONESBORO, IL (KFVS) - A teenager and an Anna woman are injured in a crash involving an SUV, passenger car, and a semi on Route 146 near Jonesboro late Friday afternoon.
The crash happened at 4:57 p.m. Friday.
Illinois State Police say 22-year-old Mary Meadows of Anna was stopped in the east bound lanes of 146 waiting to turn left onto Kratzinger Hollow Road when an SUV driven by a teenage driver didn't slow down in time to stop.
Union County sheriff's deputies say the 17-year-old driver whose name has not been released clipped the left rear bumper of Meadow's passenger car.
Troopers say it appears the teen tried to veer left to avoid hitting Meadows, but ended up hitting her bumper and continuing into the oncoming lane of traffic, in the path of a semi-tractor trailer.
The teen hit the truck head-on.
The semi truck driver, 39-year-old Thomas Wilcox of Cape Girardeau told police at the scene the crash caused his steering to go out and his rig veered left and plowed into an embankment. The box truck completely blocked both lanes, which shut down 146 for two hours.
Both Meadows and the teen sustained major injuries.
Meadows was taken to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. The teen was taken to Union County Hospital and later transferred to a Cape Girardeau hospital.
A passenger in the teen's SUV, 18-year-old Juan Garcia of Anna received minor injuries but refused medical treatment.
Richard Wilson, Jr., 29 of Anna, a passenger in Meadows' vehicle, and the truck driver were not injured.
