SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) – A 28-year-old man faces an unlawful use of a weapon charge after firing a shot into the air Friday in the parking lot of the Sikeston Wal-Mart.

According to Sikeston Department of Public Safety Sgt. Jim McMillen, calls came in around 4 p.m. reporting a man with a handgun in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

When the Officers arrived, they found the Percy Owens Jr. of Haywood City.  He was disarmed and taken into custody until the shooting incident could be investigated.

Owens Jr. told police at least two men attacked him in the parking lot.

He said at least one person in the group displayed a weapon and he felt threatened. He told investigators that's why he pulled a pistol and fired a single shot into the air.

That's when Owens Jr. told police the alleged attackers left the area and he waited for the officers to arrive.

DPS found the other parties involved and questioned them along with several other witnesses.  Police also reviewed the parking lot surveillance video.

Owens Jr. was charged with unlawful use of the weapon after police found several discrepancies with his account of the incident.

Owens Jr. was taken to the New Madrid County Jail.  He posted his $2,500 bond and was released.

Wal-Mart was temporarily closed so police could investigate.  It has since reopened.

No one was hurt during the ordeal.
