CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Blue Cross/Blue Shield will close its Cape Girardeau office by the end of May, according to Blue Cross spokesperson Deborah Wiethop.
However, instead of losing their jobs, Wiethop said about 150 BC/BS employees will keep their positions and work from home.
"In the past decade, technology has increased at a pace that enables us to move jobs to homes," Wiethop said in an e-mail to Heartland News. "This is a win-win-win situation: a win for the associates who keep their jobs in these communities, a win for the company in reduced expenses, and a win for our members who will not have to pay extra costs for real estate and related expenses."
Wiethop did acknowledge that the move would lead to a few job losses. Wiethop said the company will provide a severance program, along with outplacement assistance and counseling for the workers whose jobs are eliminated.
Wiethop said Blue Cross will be looking for a smaller office for sales, account, management and provider network management employees in Cape Girardeau.
