Chef Basket: Does it Work?

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO  (KFVS)--Not that it's all that hard to drain food, but Chef Basket promises to cut out the "middle man," if you will, and allow you to strain, drain, cook, fry and more all with the wire-mesh basket.

"That doesn't seem sturdy," notes tester Janet Ciarniello.

She is already questioning whether we can really cook penne pasta in this thing, exactly like the commercial shows.

"Augh!"

Just like that, the pasta falls through the cracks!  These are big noodles, too. Just think what spaghetti would do? As the noodles boil, we see more and more slip out of the Chef Basket. In fact, when we strain them, there are more in the pot than in the serving dish! Seems the makers should have said "You can go from the pot to the plate" but your entire dinner might not go with it!

"I guess you can turn it into a colander and get the rest of the pasta out of the pot?"

"Uh oh."

It's collapsing again! As predicted, the weight of the potatoes is just too much for the flimsy Chef Basket, despite the claim made in the commercial. While I'm ready to put the Chef Basket in the box, Janet does make this point.

"I'd steam and poach a lot of meats, so I think that would work well."

She also thinks with some re-design, this could work better. You get what you pay for with this $10 model.

"I'd give it a 'C'. Good for some uses, but not all it's advertised for."

Still, with all this collapsing and hassle, I think I'm ready to toss a bit lower letter grade into the mix. The $10 Chef Basket leaves us straining and earns a disappointing 'D' on this Does it Work test.

The consensus was clear in Ms. Beers' third grade class at Jefferson Elementary, the Fingerlings baby monkey is a toy they want.
