Paducah's uranium enrichment plant works to extend power agreement

By Heartland News

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) - USEC Inc. is working to extend the operation of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant beyond May 2012 and expects to reach a decision during the first half of 2011.

The company is negotiating with the Tennessee Valley Authority and others for power to operate Paducah beyond mid-2012 when its current power agreement with TVA expires.

The plant produces low enriched uranium used as fuel in commercial nuclear power plants in the U.S. and around the world.

The company is also looking at the possibility of enriching a portion of the Department of Energy's depleted uranium stockpile.
