CAPE GIRARDEAU (KFVS) - Sharon Schwartz probably never thought she'd have to test her survival skills on a chilly morning near downtown Cape Girardeau.
However, that's exactly what she got to do Friday when she encountered a runaway tire from a 2001 Chevy Tahoe.
According to Cape Girardeau police officer David Valentine, the driver's side rear tire came loose from the Tahoe as the vehicle was headed east on Broadway near Sunset Boulevard. The tire then went barreling toward Schwartz as she was walking on a sidewalk near Jimmy John's.
"I was walking along the street and a tire hit me in the back," Schwartz said. "That's a first for me. I'm okay, but a little bit sore."
Although Schwartz claimed the tire hit her, Valentine said there were no visible marks on Schwartz nor any other indication she'd been hit. Valentine said he gave Schwartz a ride home and she seemed to be in good shape.
Driver Jeff Wooten had no idea why it happened. "I was driving down the road when the wheel fell off," Wooten said.
When asked if he just had the tire installed, Wooten had no comment.
