JACKSON, MO (KFVS) - One in eight. That's how many women will hear the words, "You have breast cancer."

To honor and fight that number, on October 30, a pink moon will rise in Jackson.

A native to the town, Cathy Seabugh started the Pink Moon Run. It's something she works on globally and now brings back to her hometown.

"People in Jackson, Cape, Kennett shouldn't have to drive to Chicago, St. Louis or Dallas to participate in an event like this," Seabaugh said.

However, the inspiration for the run goes to the heart of her hometown roots.

"I got a phone call on February 11th," Seabaugh said as tears filled her eyes. "My sister had gone to have a growth checked out and she found out that day that it was malignant and she had breast cancer," she said.

"I remember that day as if it was yesterday," she said.

That was more than 11 years ago though.

Luckily, her sister, Sheila Hager is alive today to share her story. Thanks to medical advancements, she is cancer free.

"It's because of the research that's been done, that's why I'm still here," Hager said.

Hager's fight inspired her little sister to do something big! She created 'A Sister's Hope.' The not for profit organization raises significant funding for breast cancer research all in her sisters honor.

"My little sister, I've always said she's just a mover and a shaker," said Hager. "She makes up her mind to do something and she goes at it 100 percent. It was very humbling to me and I get goose bumps when I think of what's she's done."

'A Sister's Hope' has raised millions for breast cancer research globally.

"Without research we don't have hope," Seabaugh said. "I'm not a scientist but I can do this."

Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau is sponsoring the five mile race. It takes a scenic loop through town and around the city's courthouse. That courthouse will be lit in pink the evening of the run. To run in the race you must raise at least $80. The number is another representation of that one in eight statistic.
