CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A charter bus with students from St. Louis caught fire in Carbondale Monday morning.

It happened in on Hwy. 51 just north of Carbondale as students from Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School (MICDS) were traveling to Touch of Nature in Makanda for a 7th grade camp.

It happened when the back tire locked up and starting dragging, according to David Keim with the Carbondale Fire Department.  Keim says friction from the locked tire started fire on wheel and it spread to bus.

All 51 7th graders and chaperones were evacuated before the fire broke out and no injuries were reported.

Two other chartered buses carrying MICDS students arrived at the camp, and those same buses later took the students from the bus on to camp.

Some students lost camp gear and personal possessions as a result of the incident. The school is working with parents to collect replacement items for the students, and school officials will deliver them to the campsite Monday evening.

The highway was closed for a couple of hours.
