Rescue crews return to Mississippi River to search for missing swimmer

CAIRO, IL (KFVS) - A search and rescue operation will be underway again Monday morning in Alexander County, IL.

According to Sheriff David Barkett one person is missing after the individual tried to go swimming in the Mississippi River.

It happened near the 21st Street levy. Authorities say the person got into the water and immediately went under.

It's believed the swimmer is from North Carolina.

A second person reportedly tried to save the individual by getting in the water waist high, but the water current was too strong and he had to return to shore.
