FRANKLIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - According to Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler, his office is investigating the drowning death of a 22 month old boy.
Leffler says the boy's father, James Baxter, told him that he was in a room watching television while his girlfriend, the child's mother, was taking a nap.
Baxter says he got up and was going to go outside to smoke when he noticed the back door of the home was partially open.
Baxter says he immediately went to the bedroom where little Daltyn Baxter and his mother, Rhonda Slayton were sleeping and noticed Daltyn wasn't there.
James Baxter says he ran outside and noticed Daltyn in the swimming pool face up and unresponsive. Baxter says he pulled Daltyn out of the pool and performed CPR until emergency crews arrived and took over.
Crews say Daltyn never showed any vital signs and that he was dead on arrival at Franklin Hospital emergency room.
According to the family, a child gate was accidentally not put in place and the swimming pool ladder was accidentally left in the swimming pool.
Leffler says Daltyn Baxter's death is being treated an accidental drowning and that foul play is not suspected.
An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday but the results are not in.
