Cape Girardeau woman accused of stealing $71,000 from elderly couple

SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - A Cape Girardeau woman is accused of stealing more than $71,000 from an elderly couple in Scott County.

Linda L. Davis, 49, faces felony stealing, financial exploitation of the elderly, and forgery charges.

Davis has hired by an elderly couple in Scott County as a private caretaker in January 2010.

A relative of the elderly couple noticed odd banking transactions with the couple's bank account and found numerous high dollar checks with forged signatures made payable to Davis starting in March 2010.

The Scott County Sheriff's Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol Rural Crime Division found about $71,480 was stolen from the couple.

Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter says investigators searched Davis's home and vehicle, and found deposit slips showing that Davis deposited the majority of the missing money in her personal checking account.

Davis bonded out of jail.  Her next court appearance is September 1.
